Well ladies, the Dragon of Wantley is a legendary tale and poem about, well, a dragon slain on Wharncliffe Crags in South Yorkshire. Perhaps, the earliest form of the tale can be found in Thomas Percy's anthology Reliques of Ancient Poetry from 1767.

Latter, in 1892, Owen Wister, who was best known as the author of The Virginian, wrote a "burlesque" version of the tale, which became rather popular.
